Photography Workshops - Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the workshop aimed at?
"Take Control of your camera" is aimed at the person who has bought a nice camera (DSLR / Mirrorless with interchangeable lens) and wants to capture nice images, but is baffled by the settings. The person that wants improve their photos, or take to up photography as a more serious hobby. Attending the workshop will teach you new skills and help you achieve better results and ultimately make photography more rewarding.
What age group can attend?
Photography is a hobby that has no real age boundaries. A reasonable level of mobility and fitness is required as we will be outdoors moving around the different venues and locations. The workshop is suitable for people with disabilities. Please contact me to discuss accessibility requirements
Can I bring my kids?
Yes if they are booked on the workshop. Children must be accompanied at all times by a responsible adult.
Why do I need a tripod?
For the most part you probably don't, but with the camera securely mounted we can shoot a scene, evaluate the image, and take more photos from an identical viewpoint using various different settings. It also gives us the option to work in low light levels and of using slow shutter speeds to blur movement for creative effects. If you are unsure about equipment please contact me.
Can I borrow a camera?
We don't offer a hire service. This workshop is aimed at you learning to be master of your own equipment. To get the most from the workshop and go on to implement your new skills you will want to go away and practice with your own camera and equipment. If you are unsure about equipment please contact me.
Note - A mobile phone camera is not suitable for this workshop!
What should I wear?
The workshop is outdoor location based. We will be working outside (hopefully) whatever the weather and in the North of England it is unpredictable. Please look at the weather forecast prior to coming and dress accordingly, with suitable footwear to cover a reasonable distance walking, including adequate protection for your camera.
Do I need to go out and buy a really fancy camera?
No. A better camera does not take a better photo, and an over complicated camera can be baffling to the beginner. Photography as a hobby is a gadget lovers dream and you really can spend limitless amounts chasing the latest thing, but it isn't necessary. A nice digital camera with a versatile removable zoom lens is all you need to get going. There are many available pre owned and some real bargains to be had.
Importantly to practice what you will learn in the workshop and take your photography to the next level your camera must be able to be used in a "manual" mode. It needs the settings Auto, P (Programme), S (shutter Priorty), A (Aperture Priority, M (Manual, full manual control)
